Seif Township Indian Burial Grounds

The Indian Burial Ground location is marked with an "X"

As I was growing up on our farm in section 17 in the township of Seif, there were some mounds on the west side of the farm near our property line.  They were located due west of a spot that was called "Bright's Clearing."  The clearing had a lot of digging which I was told was done by a man, who was looking for gold.

I was told the mounds were Indian Burial Mounds, and I was to just leave them alone.  They were all in a straight row and there were about 6 to 10 of them.  At the time, which would have been late 1930's there were small trees growing on them.

I would often try to imagine what the people that had been buried there would be like.  I have no idea what  tribe it might have been.  But I would guess, it may have been the Winnebago tribe, since there were a number of tents and teepees along US Highways 10 and 12 that happened to be that tribe, plus we had a Winnebago Indian Mission School in Neillsville.

The mounds were about 10 feet high and about 30+ feet long.  Even now I wish I could drift back in time and look in on those people.   We used to find a lot of arrow heads while gardening and we even found a spear head made of flint.  One arrow head that I found when I was in the garden was perfect, it was slightly pink and the tip had a brown stain on it.  If I can locate them I will send a picture of some of arrow heads I have from that area.
