Mrs. Van Gorden pays a tribute to Colonel Smith

Mrs. Harry VanGorden of Eau Claire, known to her friends as Nellie VanGorden, the mother of “Red” and Kenneth of Neillsville, was distributing verbal orchids in Neillsville when she visited the city Tuesday. She visited The Press office, among other places, with the definite purpose of commending The Press on its selection of the Man of the Year.

“That was a wonderful article,” said Mrs. VanGorden,” and Neillsville if to be congratulated on having a man of the caliber of Colonel Smith.”

Local people are inclined to consider that Colonel Smith went his Old Hometown one better in what he did on New Guinea, but Mrs. VanGorden thinks that the two balance up, for she has a high estimate of Neillsville. She knows a lot about the city and about Clark County and was not surprised to read the figures in the New Year edition about dairy production here.

Warriors at Thorp for tilt on Friday

Edged out by 61-62 score in post-holiday opener at Fairchild Tuesday

The subdued Neillsville Warriors will resume Cloverbelt conference basketball action at Thorp Friday night, when they meet the strong Thorp high quintet.

On the basis of an earlier meeting of the teams, the locals will be satisfied if they can keep the score within a respectable range. The first meeting ended with Thorp on the very long end of a 38-70 tally.

Tuesday night the Warriors opened their post-holiday schedule at Fairchild, where they dropped a 61-62 thriller. The half-time score was tied at 30-all after Neillsville took an 18-16 lead in the first quarter. Fairchild scored 19 to Neillsville’s 16 points in the third quarter, and the warriors were not able to overcome that slim four point deficit.

Fairchild’s Emert, forward, and Neillsville’s Forest Larsen, center, battled it out to the finish for highpoint honors, with Emert edging out Larsen 23 to 22. Neillsville’s Bill Meier dumped in 17 for his finest performance of the season.

Neillsville’s “B” squad took an equally thrilling 1918 victory over the Fairchild “B” team in the preliminary game. Krejci tallied 11 points, making four out of Neillsville’s five field goals. High scorer for Fairchild was Julien, guard, with six.

New Year baby ‘73 has brother; he’s baby of ‘74

The New Year baby of 1974 at Memorial Hospital in Neillsville is a brother of the 1973 New Year baby.

He is Dale Ellis Walde, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Walde, Jr., of Rt. 2, Greenwood, and he arrived January 3, 1974, at 2:31 p.m. tipping the scales at eight pounds, three ounces, and measuring 21 inches long.

Dale Ellis’ sister is Denise, who celebrated her first birthday the day before his arrival. The New Year baby of 1973, she was born January 2, 1973.

The Walde’s have another child, a son Donald, who is “little over two years old,” Mrs. Walde says.

Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Walde, Sr., of Willard, and Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Engevold of Loyal. Dale’s mother attended Loyal High School; his father went to Greenwood High School. He is presently employed at Barr’s mink farm, west of Greenwood.

On Saturday afternoon The Clark County Press photographer visited Memorial Hospital to take a picture of the New Year baby and his mother. It was not until after the picture taking was completed and the photographer was gathering vital statistics concerning Dale that it dawned on him that he had taken a picture of Mrs. Walde in the same context sometime in the past.

“Didn’t I take a picture of you and a New Year Baby a year or two ago?” he inquired.

Both Mrs. Walde and Miss Paula Mueller, obstetrics supervisor at the hospital, laughed. “Yes,” both replied at the same time, “you took one last year,” “Then,” responded the nonplussed photographer, “shall I make an appointment now for next year?” “No” Mrs. Walde emphatically replied.

Girls glorious in 55-44 defeat

Neillsville fledgling girl’s bucketballers turned in a credible performance in their opening interscholastic contest Monday night, but fell before last year’s Cloverbelt champion Owen-Withee team, 55-44, Monday night.

“I was proud of them. They played a good game,” was the comment afterward of their coach, Miss Marsha Walters. “I wish we could meet them again, because I think we’d beat them another time.”

The girls’ team has nine scheduled games this year, with no return matches.

Leading Neillsville scorer was Judy Sischo, who pumped in 15 points. She was followed by Lori Meihack, with 10, and Rosemary Opelt with nine. Cindy Kunze had four, and the scoring was rounded out by Sandy Zimmerman, Sue VanDam and Diane Trimberg, each of whom scored two.

Their next outing is scheduled next Monday at Cornell. They plan to leave immediately after classes, about 3:45 p.m., and a junior varsity game is scheduled to start about 5 p.m.

In a meeting of Owen-Withee and Neillsville Jayvees Monday, the former won a lopsided 33-8 victory.

Talented family opens craft store

Marge’s Family Crafts is small on space but big on family spirit and quality of workmanship.

Marge Michalik opened the shop at 104 East Division St., Neillsville, in mid-November although she has been crafting all her life.

“People were always asking me to show them what I had made recently,” she said. “Several suggested I open a shop. This space came along, and I couldn’t turn it down.”

And thus Marge’s Family Crafts was born.

Michalik’s daughters and granddaughters make items for the shop including trolls, dolls, wreaths, knick knacks, floral arrangements, and assorted other items.

Michalik does much of the painting–oils on stretched canvas, wooden figurines and ceramics. They also personalize items and take orders.

Michalik prices her items reasonably, “I price it for what I’d be willing to pay for it,” she said.

The shop is open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Michalik plans to open more frequently when the weather warms up.

“It’s wonderful to be in business with the family,” she said.
