ROSS, Robert  (Nothing more on this site)
Robert Ross, who had a farm north of Christy, introduced the first Shorthorn or Durham cattle into the county. Mr. Ross bought a red Durham bull called "Marius" from John Wentworth, then editor of the Chicago Democrat. "Marius" was sired by the 15th Duke of Avia, which sire Mr. Wentworth bought at the famous New York Mills sale at a purchase price of $15,000. Ross's Shorthorns were mostly the mellow roans and good milkers. At one time he had a sire nearly all white in color and which attracted much attention. This early herd of Shorthorns form the basis of the present native stock disseminated around Christie.

SHEEHAN, Patrick H. (1838 - 1901)

Following are the particulars regarding the death of P. H. Sheehan, mention of which was made two weeks ago. The clipping is taken from the Prospect, of Prescott, Arizona, dated August 31. "Patrick H. Sheehan, proprietor of the boarding house at McCabe, and a director in the McCabe, and a director in the McCabe Consolidated Copper and Gold mining Company, met with an accident last Sunday, from the effects of which he died Tuesday morning. Mr. Sheehan had been to Huron station on the P. E. railroad, and upon his return when he attempted to alight from his buggy, his foot caught in the brake and he was thrown violently to the ground. The fall caused an injury to his spine and resulted in paralysis. "Mr. Sheehan was a native of Canada, but went from there to Wisconsin over forty years ago, where he lived until he came to Arizona in 1895. He was hale and hearty at 63 years of age, and his sudden death was a shock to the community in which he lived, where he was well and favorably known. A wife (sister of William Mead, Longwood) and two daughters survive him. One daughter, Mrs. Riggs, resides at Morenci, and the other Miss Edna Sheehan, at McCabe. The remains were brought to the residence of Mrs. Hill in West Prescott, who was an old friend of the deceased, and the funeral services were conducted.                                7-31-1884: “Pat Shehan has now become a resident of Longwood, and will soon erect a good house. He heartily welcome his coming, and would be glad to welcome many more energetic men like him.” (Pat Sheehan on the 1895 City of Greenwood census)

SORENSON, Nils Kristian (4 Sept 1855-22 Jun 1946)

The 1900 Federal census has Nils Sorenson and family in Hixon Township, that census yet to be detailed on this site. The 1906 Plat Map for Hixon Township has Nils Sorenson in sec 22, just north of the village of Withee and also in Longwood Township sec 25, but no residence is on that property (1905 plat map). Nils was the brother of Juluis and Martin Sorenson, founders of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Longwood in 1884 (see church quote following)Various source records site members of the Nils Sorenson as being from Longwood, the oldest part of Hixon Township (organized in 1873) which encompassed R 4W, R3W, and R2W before it was split during the years 1880-1915. Longwood, R2W, was organized into a separate Township in 1896. This family has been included in the “Longwood Township 1905 and prior” biography because of their family ties and involvement in the early developement of Longwood.

History of Emmanuel Lutheran Church:The first Norwegian to set foot on this territory is unknown, but a little picture begins to shape itself about the year 1884. On June 15th of that year the first known church service was held for Norwegians at the home of Julius Sorenson, in a log house one mile east of Longwood (now the James Peterson Farm, 1969, Section 26 NE 1/4, NE 1/4).
