Dorchester's Grade School

Dorchester, Clark County, Wisconsin

The "New" Dorchester Grade School--1890

The bell in the tower on top was to summon the children to classes.

The photo above was taken by photographer Joseph Hoff who grew up on a farm in Little Black Twp., Section 34, just north of the Mayville/Little Black line. His father, Mathew Hoff, was a Civil War veteran and one of the very earliest settlers in the area. Linda Mertens, area historian.

The Dorchester Graded School after 1883--the addition on the left was added to the original building which is pictured at the top of the page.  The entire structure burned to the ground in 1959, when it was Carlson's garage.  (Pg. 19, Dorchester Centennial Booklet; contributed by Pearl Vorland)
