100 Years Ago (1907)

Stanley Sunbeams – A lodge of Knights of Pythias was organized here on the 5th inst.

Officers elect of Thorp Lodge No. 606, Mystic Workers of the World, elected December 4; Prefect – S. W. Pierson; Monitor – Joseph Bunyea; Secretary – M. F. Pierson; Banker – R. Chamberlain; Marshal – W. Chamberlain; Warder – O. Hickox; Sentinel – H. D. Aucutt; Supervisor – Alfred Laflex.

A Farmers’ Institute is to be held at Owen on Dec. 19 and 20, F. H. Scribner conductor. A cooking school will be held in connection with the Institute.

75 Years Ago (1932)

Plans are underway by the American Legion, Cash Club, Lions Club, and other Thorp merchants to decorate the white way and provide a community Christmas tree for Thorp.  Santa will be here on Saturday afternoon and will have a bag for every little boy and girl.

M. Zukowski & Son this week announce the grand opening of their new home and store, 3 miles east of Thorp, on Saturday, Dec. 10th.

Drilling through a concrete floor, a burglar lowered himself into the vault of the state bank at Gilman, worked the combination of a safe and obtained $4800 in cash.

Neiman’s Corner – A fire of unknown origin destroyed the house and all its contents last Friday at 5 a.m. at the John Oryszczn farm.

50 Years Ago (1957)

Members of the Rural Volunteer Fire Department were called out early Tuesday morning at 5:40 a.m. to put out a chimney fire at the farm home of Tony Benzschawel in Worden Township.

Thorp volunteer firemen worked to put out a fire confined in the upper portion of the building at the Emmett Frese farm home in the Town of Reseburg.

25 Years Ago (1982)

Walter Marek, 75, Thorp, died December 12 after apparently falling from his tractor and being run over by a manure spreader he was pulling.

Terrance Shaw of La Crosse was found guilty of the first degree sexual assault and murder of Susan (Anderson) Erickson.

10 Years Ago (1997)

The Fantasy Fair, sponsored by the Thorp Jaycees, continues to grow with this year’s event.  Vendors from as far away as Wausau, Osseo, Medford, Marshfield and Eau Claire drew crowds of shoppers gearing up for the holiday season.

Thorp police officer Patricia Arciszewski, responding with lights and siren to assist Stanley Police in a domestic abuse with injuries call at Stanley, struck a vehicle at the intersection of Washington and CTH X, December 8 at about 4:00 p.m.  The car struck by the squad car was pushed into Pabich’s Grocery Store parking lot where it hit another car.
