Greetings to Thorp Alumni

As 2007 comes to a close, the staff of the Thorp Alumni Association whishes everyone a wonderful holiday season.

We also thank everyone who volunteered their time and talents during 2007 to help with TAA activities.  Finally, we thank the donors to the TAA Scholarship Fund.  With your support we have been able to award scholarships to many deserving graduating seniors.

The TAA staff included:

The 1982-83 Thorp High School class (celebrating their 25th anniversary in 2008) left their mark at THS.  In 1979, one hundred and six students entered high school as freshmen.  In 1983, seventy two seniors graduated.

The 1983 annual, Cardinalis, was dedicated to Mr. Daryl C. Braatz.  The students stated, “Mr. Braatz, we dedicate the 1983 Cardinalis to you for all you have done for us in the past four years.  You have been a very active member of Thorp High School for the past fifteen (15) years. Through your leadership in FBLA, you have helped us gain much recognition for our school at the local, state and national levels.”

Thorp High School has built a reputation over the years in many areas.  One of those is the organization of Future Business Leaders of America.  Mr. Braatz coached his parliamentary procedure team to first place in the nation.  He also advised one national officer, two state presidents and numerous other officers.

Senior class officers included: President –Jay Stuttgen, Vice President – Hans Hallanger, Treasurer – Ralph Haas, Secretary – Alicia Alger, Historian – Rebecca Young, Student Council Representative – Rhonda Gerrits, Point Captain – Kathleen Sayles.

Organizations included: Future Farmers of America, Future Homemakers of America, Future Business Leaders of America, Student Council, Jazz and Show Choir, Pep Band, Pep Club, Library and Forensics, Thorpettes, Vocational Industrial Clubs of America, Intramurals, Bootlegger’s Ski Club, National Honor Society.

Cardinalis Staff: Editor – Doug Grabowski, Co-Editor – Kate Kaz, Copy Editor – Karen Krei, Junior Co-Editor – Eva Malecki, Sports Editor – Joe Boden, Index Manager – Jennie Osowski, Art Editor – Jill Turenne, Ass’t Copy Editor – Becky Walteraitis, Business Manager – Naomi Beino.

Athletics: Football team with Head Coach – Earl Larson, Ass’t Coach – Jack Tetzner, Ass’t Coach – Wayne Busse.  Their record was 8 wins and 1 loss.  Senior players included Joe Boden, Gilbert Voelker, Brent Kryzanski, Steve Merlak, John Rademaker, Jay Stuttgen, Kert Boie, Ed VanAntwerpen, Danny Nowak, Jim Ciolkosz, Hans Hallanger, Erick Zoromski and Bob Czech.

The girl’s volleyball team was led by coaches Lynn Fass, Beth Anderson and Laura Woodbury.  Seniors were Carmon Rosemeyer and Patsy Slowiak.

Boy’s basketball coaching staff included: Head Coach – Jack Tetzner, JV-Coach – Roger Moe and Freshmen Coach –Wayne Busse.  The varsity team, coming off of a 2nd place finish at the State Tournament – Class C, finished with a 14-3 regular season record.  Seniors included Kert Boie, Bob Czech, Steve Merlak, Eric Zoromski, John Rademaker, Jay Stuttgen, Brent Kryzanski, Tim Kotecki and Jim Ciolkosz.

Girl’s basketball, under the direction of Head Coach – Bill Harycki and JV Coach Renee Kupsch, had only one senior, Karen Schmitz.  The girls finished the regular season with an 8-9 record.

The 1982-83 wrestling team, coached by Earl Larson, compiled a 7-5-1 record.  The team had its best finish ever in the conference meet, placing second.  Seniors included Ivan Hubbard, Allen Susnik, Ed VanAntwerpen, Danny Nowak, Joe Boden and Gilbert Voelker.

Senior girls on the cheerleading squad included Rhonda Gerrits, Joann Noah and Jennie Osowski.

The 1982 Homecoming King was Kevin Burzynski and Queen Mandy Orheim. Senior attendants were Dan Nowak and Roseanne Ciolkosz.  As juniors, in 1982, Bob Czech was Prom King and Queen was Patsy Slowiak.

The 1983 graduates stated in the yearbook: “These last four years have been most magical.  As we leave we will remember the slamming of lockers, the smiles and shouts of greeting in the halls, the pep assemblies that showed the spirit of what Thorp is all about, all the fun times at noon, and all the laughter and tears we have shared together.”
