Way Back When

 The Thorp Courier  --   August 16, 2006

Here’s a handsome soldier on the fields of World War II. The year was 1943, and our local boy was stationed in the Third Division near an African city made famous by a movie of the same name. Does anyone know who this gentleman is and the story behind his tour of duty?

Mrs. (Krause) Colins, now of Wausau, called in last week to explain our church photograph. This is, of course, the church that was formerly located on CTH N near the Sylvan Cemetery. Mrs. Colins’ father, Charles Krause, helped build the church, sometime between 1900 and 1906 and married his wife Marie there in 1908. The Krauses lived southwest of the Sylvan Cemetrey (Cemetery). The church was moved into Thorp in 1947, during the same time Sylvia’s father died. The photo, sent to us from Anita (Bobb) Nye is of the church the day it was moved into Thorp, where it remained as St. Paul’s Lutheran Church until the day it was again relocated.
