Way Back When

 The Thorp Courier  --   November 08, 2006..

You know winter is coming when our Way Back When photos have the white sheen of newly fallen snow. Here are three young loggers who are likely to stay warm, even out on a frosty day like the one depicted. They’re working pretty hard, clearing land in the Thorp area. According to the corner notation by photographer E. W. Ehlert, the photograph was taken January 19, 1919. Can anyone tell us any more about these three hard workers?

Recent Photo (two weeks ago):

Lisa Haas from Pennsylvania was able to identify the majority of the people in the Huls family photograph. According to her, they are: Back Row (L-R) John Huls, Barney Huls, Henriette (Hattie) Huls, Mary N. Huls Vanderloop, unknown person added later, Aleida (Lyda) Huls Emmers, and Maurice, George, and Bill Huls (order unknown). Front Row: Catherine Sieverdienk Huls and Henry Huls. Missing is Hanna Huls Roder.

Recent Photo (last week):

Dean Hubbard recognized the Kraus farm that was featured last week. The farm is located just off CTH M, about 4 ˝ miles south of Thorp. Dean and Billy Kraus grew up together. Dean remembers that the large barn at the far right of the photograph burned about 35 years ago. The Kraus farm raised Ormsby registered cattle.
