Snow was still on the ground when this photo was taken in 1910 at the Hewettville School. The stocking caps and the woolen clothes provided warmth. One-room school houses were usually heated by a single potbelly stove--those seated close to it got warm quickly and then roasted; those at the edges remained chilled on one side and tepid on the other. There were some days when ice had to be broken out of the water bucket.
