Tecumseh's War (August 1810 – October 5, 1813)

Battle of Tippecanoe, Copyright 1889 by Kurtz & Allison

Location: Fought across Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, southern Canada, Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri, Tecumseh's War was a struggle not only for territory but also for Native people's future in relation to the United States.  Menominee, Ho-Chunk, Sioux, and Potawatomi warriors from Wisconsin joined him in opposing the Americans during the War of 1812. Tecumseh died at the Battle of the Thames on October 5, 1813, defending his positions while the British regulars fled.

President: James Madison

Tecumseh's War was waged against the United States in an effort to stop the encroachment by pioneers into their ancestrial home.

The Shawnee chief Tecumseh, was born near Chillicothe, Ohio in 1768.  He fought to secure a permanent territory for the indigenous tribes to be bordered by the Great Lakes of the north, the Ohio River in the east and south, and the Mississippi River. Native peoples were split, but Tecumseh and his confederacy sided with the British.  He was killed in a confrontation in Detroit and with his death, the dream of a Native American nation on this continent died too.  The defeat opened the Northwest Territory, establishing the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
