Way Back When

 The Thorp Courier  --   February 21, 2007

School Days! This group of boys and girls had never heard of a cell phone or a laptop computer. They never played a video game, watched a DVD or went to the mall to hang out with friends. They spent their free time playing jacks or marbles, fishing, catching frogs and climbing trees. Do you spot someone you know among these grinning faces? What about the teacher? Do you know who she might be?

Two Weeks Ago:

Do you remember the “Way Back When” photo from February 7, of a young couple dressed in their finery? Well, Anita Nye called to thank us for printing a photo of her grandparents Arthur and Jeanette “Nettie” Bobb. He was 22 and she just 21 years old, in 1910 when this wedding photograph was taken. Arthur grew up on a farm and his father started Bobb Mill Logging. Later on Arthur became a teacher and I am told he somehow made time to become a cheese maker. Thank you Anita; for allowing this couple to step off the page and tell us their tale.

Last Week:

As for last weeks photograph, we received a call from Jennie Clerf telling us all about the “Way Back When” city street photograph. She remembers so many of the businesses such as Hewitt’s Hardware and Dime Store, Bob’s Tavern where she would stop in for a burger, Wolf’s Shoe Store and the Soo Hotel owned by Jim and Rose Norton. Did you know that “Way Back When’ Thorp had its very own Opera House? Jennie did and she told us all about it.
