Way Back When

 The Thorp Courier  --   May 03, 2006.

Beth Hutter of Thorp lent us this old photograph of her grandfather, Theodore Broeren. She believes it was taken some time in the early 1900’s when the Broerens homesteaded the property currently owned by the Eichmans south of Thorp on CTH M. Beth suspects that the younger man in the photo is Theodore’s son Frank Broeren. At the time, this had been a stand of virgin timber.

Although Beth knows why this picture was taken of this destroyed stand of trees, we’re wondering if you can identify why it appears that Frank is stand(ing) on a hill of dirt. Look closely and let us know if you can tell what happened here.

Last Week's Photo:

We had many callers who correctly identified our last week’s photograph of the three Thorp High School Prom couples. John Kidziora and Harley Svoma were our first two. The couples are (L-R) Ann (Sniegowski) Huls and Norman Maier, Kate (Slowiak) Ebben and Cliff Ebben, and Yvonne Pitt and Bob Rubisch. The year was 1946. Katie and Cliff were married in 1948.

For more information on this photo, check next week's column.
