Mina Olecie Dover was born May 1876. On Christmas day, 1894, at the age of 18, she married twenty nine year old Aaron Blumenstein in their home town, Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

June 22, 1900, Floyd Draper stopped by the Blumenstein Hotel and Opera House in Loyal, Wisconsin (pictured below) while recording the 234th township family for the Federal Census, he noted the death of the couples first and only son.  Their little boy, Byron W., born February 10th of that year and sadly passed away the next day.  Aaron and Minnie buried his frail remains in the Loyal, Wis. City cemetery.

Tragedy again hit the Blumenstein's in February of  1905, when their opera house at Loyal caught fire and burned to the ground. The fire caught in the garret from a defective chimney and had gained considerable headway before discovered.  The Huntley Entertainers had been using the hall the two nights before and the building was being heated up for their use that evening when it caught fire. The company saved all their belongings and the scenery in the building was also saved. The loss will amount to about $2,500 with an insurance of $500. Several other buildings in the neighborhood caught fire but were extinguished before much damage was done.  The building was rebuilt to the pleasure of the people of Loyal.

In 1912, F. M. Voight and Mary Voight sold Aaron Blumenstein, part of lots 63 and 64 of block 51, Henning's plat. Seventh ward, city of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, east 1/2 of southwest 1/4 of section 15, township 13 north of range 15 east. $1, etc.

In1914, Fred and Mary Voight bought both the hotel and the Opera House from Aaron Blumenstein. The Blumenstein's then moved to Ripon where another Hotel, known as "Blumies Hotel Leroy" was opened.

By 1923, the turmoil in the Blumenstein's life led to a major divorce case in 1924 when the couple divorced.  Aaron lived a long and fruitful life before he was buried in the Loyal, Wisconsin City Cemetery  next to his son, Byron.  We do not know the final details of Minnie Dover Blumenstein's life.  Please contact us if you do!

The opera house at Loyal caught fire last Saturday during the noon hour and burned to the ground.

The Central Hotel in Loyal was built in the late 1800s, and the adjoining opera house was built around 1910. In 1914, Fred and Mary Voight bought both properties from Aaron Blumenstein. The Voight's operated the hotel for several years, but the opera house burned to the ground in 1924. After the fire, the vacant lot was made into a pretty flower garden that was enjoyed by everyone.

Damages Alienation Suit

The Manitowoc Herald News

Fond du Lac, Jan. 17, 1924 – Aaron Blumenstein, Ripon hotel proprietor, who sued A. A. Pilon, Fond du Lac insurance agent and club man for alienation of Mrs. Blumentstein's affections, was awarded $6,000 by a jury in circuit court here today.

Detectives hired by Blumenstein testified that "key hold" observations made by them disclosed Pilon and Mrs. Blumenstein in a room of Blumenstein's hotel in Ripon.

Pilon has been named as co-respondent in a divorce action filed by Blumenstein against his wife, according to court records.  All of the parties are prominent in Fond du Lac County society.

Manitowoc County people have followed the Fond du Lac case with more than passing interest due to the fact that both Blumenstein and Pilon are former residents of the county.  Pilon, defendant in the case, who is held by the jury for a $6,000 judgement, formerly resided at Two Rivers, where he made his home for years, it being said that at one time he was a member of the Coast Guard crew of the government at that point.  Later he engaged in the real estate business and some year ago removed to Fond du Lac, where he followed the insurance and real estate line, and is said to have achieved financial success and to be counted as well to do at this time.

Blumenstein also made his home in Manitowoc County for many years, the family having resided near Valders, between that village and Collios, for many years previous to removing to Ripon where Blumenstein has made a success in the hotel business.

Sensational testimony was presented in the trial of the case and a feature of the prosecution's case was a purported confession alleged to have been signed by Mrs. Blumenstein.  The confession was said to have been made to a Milwaukee detective engaged on the case.  It was alleged that the confession was secured after detectives found Mrs. Blumenstein in Pilon's room, while her husband was absent.

Pilon, called to testify in his own defence, told his story of the two days at the hotel.  He spent the night of Nov. 21 there, he said, and returned on Nov. 22.  He told of watching a game of bridge with two men in the hotel and of drinking a glass of homemade wine with one of them at an hour considerably later than the time at which detectives claim he was in the room with Mrs. Blumenstein.

After he went to his room, Pilon state, Mrs. Blumenstein rushed into the room, seeming to ber very much frightened.  He was just about to put his wallet under his mattress at the time he said.  Mrs. Blumenstein, he testified, declared she thought the two strange men were holding up the hotel.  The couple waited in Pion's room while the supposed robbers seemed to be going to the different rooms, he said.  When they knocked at his door, he said, eh took his wallet which contained $300 and three it out the window.

Pilon claimed that the detectives made demands on him for a cash settlement a few moments after they had sent Mrs. Blumenstein to her room.  He was turned out of the hotel at an early hour in the morning, he said, while he still protested.  One of the detectives told him as he left that they were after the woman, he testified.

Divorce Settlement

Manitowoc Herald-Times 21 Aug 1924

In Fond du Lac courts a decision has been handed down awarding Mrs. Minnie Blumenstein $3,660 as a two-fifths share in property of her husband, Aaron Blumenstein, owner of a hotel at Ripon.  The couple, both of whom are former Manitowoc County residents, recently figured in a sensational case which resulted in an action for alienation.  A. A. Pilon, Fond du Lac businessman, also a former Manitowoc County man, was named in the case.

Supreme Court Upholds $6,000 judgment

Manitowoc Herald-Times 15 Oct 1924

In a decision handed down yesterday, the Wisconsin Supreme Court upheld the verdict of a jury in the Fond du Lac County Circuit Court in the Blumenstein-Pilon damage suit growing out of charges by Aaron Blumenstein, Ripon hotel man, against A. A. Pilon, Fond du Lac insurance man, for alleged alienation of affections of Mrs. Blumenstein.  As a result of the decision of the high court, Pilon, a former resident of Two Rivers, this county, must pay the judgement awarded Blumenstein as damages.

The jury in circuit court had returned a verdict of $6,000, of which $1,500 was for compensatory damages and $4,500 exemplary damages.  Appeal was taken from the verdict and judgment of the Fond du Lac County Circuit Court on the grounds of alleged error in instructions by Judge Chester A. Fowler, and because it was held that the exemplary damages were too large in proportion to the compensatory or actual damages.

Evidence taken in the trial of the case, in which conversation between Pilon and Mrs. Blumenstein were included, was entered in the trial of the divorce case, in which Blumenstein secured his freedom from the bonds of matrimony.

Blumenstein is also a former resident of the northern part of Manitowoc County.

History

Valders was settled in the 1850s by immigrants from the Valdres mountainous region of Norway. The largest town in Valdres is Fagernes, but many immigrants arriving in Wisconsin came from the valleys of Vestre Slidre and Øystre Slidre, when hunger (sult) in these rocky hillside farms was far from unheard of. Valders did not really develop as a village until the arrival of the railroad in 1896, the traditional year of its founding. It was incorporated as a village under Wisconsin law in 1921, with William F. Christel as the first village president.[7] As the village was founded by Norwegians, it was natural that the first churches were Lutheran: Valders Lutheran parish, Our Savior Lutheran parish, and Gjerpin Lutheran parish. These were later combined into Faith Lutheran parish (ELCA). There is also a small Protestant Conference parish. After the arrival of the railroad, many German settlers moved in who were primarily Catholic, but no parish was developed for them. To this day, there is still a significant population of Catholics, including most of the area farmers, who worship at St. Gregory in St. Nazianz to the south, St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Clarks Mills to the north (presently joined to St. Michael in Whitelaw), or St. Thomas the Apostle in Newton to the east.
