They made entry under the Homestead Act receiving 80 acres each. They set to work building a log shanty on William’s claim filling the chinks with yellow clay that could be found anywhere under a foot of black loamy soil.

Umhoefer, A. X. [Sketches of Pioneers, page 54, column 2] He was born in Cherokee, January of 1886. He married Mary Lyons in September of 1913, who died in 1918. He then married Bertha LaBudde in 1923. He had three children, twin sons James and Paul and a daughter Mary. He graduated from Colby High School and also the University of Wisconsin. He taught school a few years, was associated in the lumber business with his brother Emil and his uncle, Joe Weix, then he entered into partnership with his father-in-law James E. He lived on a farm until he came to Colby in 1874 where he was engaged in the hardware business. He also owned a farm in Colby and was largely interested in raising purebred stock. He was also chairman of the town of four years and chairman of the county board for one year.

He was striving to reach his grandfather in New York He served in the Civil War and came to Colby in 1876.

Welsch, Henry Sr. [Sketches of Pioneers, page 21, column 1] Henry Sr. was born in Prussia in 1840 and emigrated to the U.S. with his parents in 1847. He served in the Civil War, was honorably discharged and carried the effects of a rebel bullet in the battle of Chancellersville. He came to Clark County in 1876 and purchased a farm in sec. 24, town of Green Grove. Later he lived in Colby with the exception of four years in Hemlock, Wisconsin. Hunt of Dorchester was selected agent for both plants and Elmer Dehne was the driver-salesman.
